Gemshorn

  • Origin: Germany
  • Key: C (tenor) & F (alto)
  • Range: 1 octave
  • Material: Horn, wood
  • Halfway between the recorder and the ocarina, this medieval instrument (15th century) is made from a hollowed-out animal horn and has a warm, soft and enveloping sound, particularly well-suited to early music. It can be used as a solo instrument as well as in a quartet with its entire family (soprano, alto, tenor and bass).
